Which Wines are Considered “Sweet”?
The German wine law requires a minimum of 45 g/l residual sugar. There's no limit for more.
The sweetness results from the natural sugars of the fully ripened grapes. After fermentation these wines usually with sweet reserve, which is nothing else but grape must having been cooled and stored under pressure to keep it from fermentation.
The share of unfermentated must is the reason, why sweet wines most often have less alcohol than dry ones.
