Red Dessert Wine

Red Dessert Wine

Red Wines of Noble Sweetness – A Truly Special Rarity

Made from extremely ripe grapes, wines of noble sweetness made from red grapes are genuine rarities. Like the white dessert wines, they require an exceptionally long ripening period. In addition, the grapes must remain perfectly healthy throughout the entire growing season so that the berries can shrivel on the vine like raisins and become naturally concentrated by the sun.

Unfortunately, such highly ripe dessert wines cannot be harvested every year.

How Do Red Wines of Noble Sweetness Differ from Semi-Sweet and Sweet Red Wines?

Red wines of noble sweetness are noticeably denser and far more intense in flavour than the lighter semi-sweet and sweet red wines. Their sweetness is also significantly more pronounced.

Here you will find an overview of all wines of noble sweetness.

How Do Wines of Noble Sweetness from Red Grapes Taste?

These wines are characterised by intense sweetness and great density, which underline the expressive aromatics of their grape variety. The wines taste full-bodied, harmonious and elegant and linger particularly long on the palate.

Depending on the grape variety, the aromatics of the wines of noble sweetness differ. Regent offers an abundance of fruit aromas, primarily cherry and berries, while Moscato Rosa, as one of the few red bouquet grape varieties, contributes a floral and spicy Muscat note.

The colour nuances of the wines range from very light to deep dark red.

Enjoying Red Wines of Noble Sweetness

Red dessert wines are stand-alone drinks that are not necessarily enjoyed together with food. As an aperitif for a multi-course menu, they are an extravagant choice.

True to their name, these wines pair with desserts, pastries and sweet dishes, especially those based on cocoa. They also pair particularly well with cheese or nuts and with fine pralines and high-quality chocolate.

Special Dessert Wine Glasses?

Special sweet wine glasses are available from specialist retailers; however, we prefer large, bulbous goblets, which allow you to “immerse your nose” in the glass in order to experience the wonderful aromatics of the wines with all your senses.

Serving Temperature

Red wines of noble sweetness develop their aromatics best at 16–18 °C, but depending on personal preference they also tolerate slight chilling. Simply try out how the wines taste best to you.

Which Grape Varieties are Used to Produce Red Wines of Noble Sweetness?

particularly well suited for red wines of noble sweetness

Only a few red grape varieties are suitable for wines of noble sweetness. The vines must be capable of reaching the required very high must weight; varieties such as Portugieser are hardly able to achieve this.

In order to harvest a red dessert wine, all (!) factors must be 100% right:

  • suitable grape variety
  • extreme ripeness = raisin-like shrivelled berries
  • favourable weather conditions for perfectly healthy grapes

The availability of red dessert wines or dessert rosé wines varies from year to year. We consider ourselves fortunate if at least every second year a red grape variety reaches the required level of ripeness.

Grape Varieties for Red Wines of Noble Sweetness

We currently offer two very different wines of noble sweetness made from red grapes. These grape varieties are particularly well suited to wines of noble sweetness due to their intensity of flavour:

  • Regent, a very fruity red grape variety with intense colour,
  • Moscato Rosa, a fruity rarity with bouquet and light colour that reaches very high levels of ripeness.

Red Wines of Noble Sweetness – Tangible Quality

Our wines of noble sweetness from red grapes are German quality wines or German quality wine with special distinction, which we cultivate, vinify, mature and bottle with great care:

  • from healthy, very ripe grapes
  • gently pressed with low pressure
  • only crystal-clear filtered must is fermented
  • slow, temperature-controlled fermentation at low temperature
  • long ageing on the lees to develop the aromatics

Quality Assurance and Control

Red wines of noble sweetness already stand out due to their exceptional level of ripeness. These wines often do not ferment completely by nature and therefore retain their natural sweetness from grape sugar.

Certified High-End Quality of the Wines of Noble Sweetness

  • Only flawless red wines of noble sweetness with varietal-typical aromatics are bottled.
  • After the prescribed analysis, the wines undergo quality assessment by the Chamber of Agriculture.
  • The wines of noble sweetness may only be designated as “German Quality Wine” or “German Predicate Wine” after successfully passing the quality examination.
