Grape Variety Huxelrebe – Exotic Fruit Bouquet

Huxelrebe is an aromatic white grape variety bred in Rheinhessen and is still among the more rarely cultivated varieties today. Huxelrebe wines are regarded as true connoisseurs’ wines.

As a typical bouquet variety, Huxelrebe produces full-bodied, fruit-driven white wines with intense aromatics. Characteristic are exotic fruit notes such as mango, passion fruit and ripe citrus fruits.

Sweet Wines + Verjus

We vinify our Huxelrebe as a sweet white wine and as noble sweet dessert wines. The pleasantly ripe acidity harmonises beautifully with the pronounced fruit richness of the variety.

In addition, we also produce verjus from Huxelrebe – the sour grape juice used in fine cuisine. With its fine, gentle acidity, it offers a versatile and elegant alternative to vinegar or lemon.

Sweet Huxelrebe wines are enjoyable companions for special moments. They are excellent as an aperitif and pair very harmoniously with desserts, sweet dishes or aromatic cheese selections.

Huxelrebe Sites at Weingut Fuchs

Our Huxelrebe vines grow in the Rheinhessen part of the estate in the warm “Dalsheimer Sauloch”. The sheltered site with deep, fertile soils offers this demanding variety very good conditions for optimal ripening and the development of its intense aromatics.

Facts about the White Grape Variety Huxelrebe

Origin of Huxelrebe

Huxelrebe noble sweet white wine

Huxelrebe was bred in 1927 at the State Institute for Vine Breeding in Alzey by Georg Scheu, the breeder of the well-known Scheurebe. It originated from a crossing of Chasselas Blanc and Courtillier musqué. The variety was named in honour of the winegrower Fritz Huxel from Westhofen, who early on promoted its cultivation.

Characteristics of the Variety

Huxelrebe has very high demands on site, climate and vineyard management. It is sensitive to winter frost and, due to its early budburst, is also at risk from late spring frosts.

The variety ripens early and can reach very high must weights in favourable vintages. The golden-yellow berries grow on large bunches and show an intense, spicy fruit character.

High ripeness leads to a harmoniously integrated acidity structure that gives the wines freshness and expressive character.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about the Grape Variety Huxelrebe

Is Huxelrebe a typical dessert wine?

Yes. Due to its high must weights and pronounced aromatics, Huxelrebe is particularly well suited for fruity sweet white wines and dessert wines of noble sweetness.

How does Huxelrebe differ from classic white wines?

Huxelrebe belongs to the group of aromatic bouquet varieties. Its wines usually taste more intense and fruity than many classic, rather neutral white wines.

Why is Huxelrebe rarely found in wine ranges?

The variety is grown only in small quantities and is less well known than more widespread classics. For this reason, Huxelrebe wines are usually found in more specialised selections.

Is Huxelrebe suitable as an aperitif?

Yes. With its aromatic richness and harmoniously integrated sweetness, Huxelrebe is a popular pleasure wine for special moments or as an aperitif.
