Grape Variety Siegerrebe – Grapey, Spicy Aromatics

Siegerrebe is an aromatic modern white grape variety and is among the more rarely cultivated varieties. This is mainly due to its low yields and its high demands regarding site conditions and vineyard management.

Siegerrebe is a bouquet grape variety. It typically produces full-bodied, highly expressive white wines with pronounced Muscat notes and intense grapey aromatics. Its pleasantly mild, ripe acidity supports the opulent aroma profile and creates a harmonious balance.

Wine + Balsamic Vinegar

Thanks to its high must weights, Siegerrebe is particularly well suited for dessert wines of noble sweetness. Its spicy-fruity style makes Siegerrebe dessert wines an elegant apéritif as well as a versatile partner for desserts, foie gras, blue cheese or aromatic cheese varieties.

In addition to dessert wines, we also produce a fine balsamic wine vinegar from highly ripe Siegerrebe grapes, characterised by fruity-spicy aromatics and a soft acidity.

Vineyard Sites of Siegerrebe at Weingut Fuchs

Our Siegerrebe vines grow in very warm, sheltered locations on both sides of the border between Rheinhessen and the Palatinate. Some are planted in the gently south-facing Monsheimer Rosengarten, while others grow on the south-facing slope of the Niefernheimer Schnepfenflug in the Zellertal. These sites ensure reliable ripening and the development of very high must weights.

Interesting Facts about the White Grape Variety Siegerrebe

Origin of Siegerrebe

Siegerrebe + Ortega Beerenauslese white wine

Siegerrebe was bred in 1929 by Georg Scheu at the State Institute for Vine Breeding in Alzey. The recognised parent varieties are Madeleine Angevine and Gewuerztraminer. According to later statements from the breeder’s family, it may also have originated through self-pollination of Madeleine Angevine.

Characteristics of the Variety

Siegerrebe buds early and therefore requires very warm, wind-protected vineyard sites without the risk of late spring frosts. It is also demanding in terms of soil selection, as it can react sensitively to high lime content.

The large, loosely clustered grapes ripen very early and must remain on the vine for an extended period in order to reach very high must weights. During this time they are particularly vulnerable to bird damage and wasp feeding.

The berries have pink to light red skins while their juice remains white. The variety is characterised by a pronounced grapey-spicy bouquet, making Siegerrebe one of the most aromatic white grape varieties of all.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about the Grape Variety Siegerrebe

Is Siegerrebe a sweet grape variety?

Due to its naturally high must weights, Siegerrebe is particularly well suited for sweet wines. However, it can also be vinified in dry styles.

Why does Siegerrebe reach such high must weights?

The variety ripens very early and can remain on the vine for a long time under favourable conditions. During this extended ripening period the berries accumulate high sugar levels and develop very intense aromatics.

Is Siegerrebe related to Gewürztraminer?

Yes. Gewürztraminer is considered one of the parent varieties of Siegerrebe. This is why Siegerrebe wines often show similarly spicy, muscat-like aromatic notes.

Why does Siegerrebe require particularly sheltered vineyard sites?

The variety buds very early and is therefore sensitive to late spring frosts. Warm, sheltered vineyard locations are important to ensure reliable ripening and harvest security.

Is Siegerrebe an aromatic bouquet variety?

Yes. Siegerrebe is classified as an aromatic bouquet variety and is known for its pronounced grapey and spicy fragrance profile.
