Grape Variety Green Silvaner – Mild Acidity, Delicate Fruit

Green Silvaner is one of Germany’s traditional white grape varieties and has been an integral part of domestic viticulture for centuries.

We particularly appreciate Silvaner for its restrained, subtle aromatics and its pleasantly mild acidity. This results in harmonious white wines that are excellent and versatile food companions. We bottle our Silvaner as a dry white wine.

Typical Silvaner wines show delicate fruit notes, a clear structure and an unobtrusive style. Precisely for this reason, they do not dominate the palate but accompany dishes in a balanced and subtle way.

Silvaner is especially popular as a classic partner for asparagus, as it supports the fine aromatics of this delicate vegetable without overpowering them.

Green Silvaner Vineyard Sites at Weingut Fuchs

Our Silvaner vines grow on gently sloping south to south-west facing sites at the Einselthumer Kreuzberg on the Palatinate side of the estate. Here they benefit from fertile soils and sheltered conditions that allow the grapes to reach excellent ripeness.

Origin of Silvaner

Dry Silvaner white wine

Wine historians assume that Silvaner was originally selected from wild vines in the Austrian Danube region. It is documented that in 1665 the Cistercian abbot Alberich Degen brought the variety to Franconia, from where it spread to other wine-growing regions.

In the 19th century, Silvaner was at times the most important grape variety in Germany. Despite its many positive qualities, the variety has somewhat fallen out of fashion and its cultivation area has been declining for years.

In 2009, the “Silvaner Year” marked the 350th anniversary of the first documented mention of Silvaner in Rheinhessen.

Characteristics of the Variety

Silvaner places high demands on soil conditions. It performs best on fertile, deep soils with sufficient water supply. On very dry or poor sites, the variety usually produces only average quality wines.

Due to its high sensitivity to winter frost, Silvaner also requires sufficiently warm and sheltered vineyard locations.

The medium-sized bunches of Silvaner ripen relatively late. They are compact, with round, green-yellow berries that have firm skins.
