Let's See What We Have Here

Scheurebe is a white grape variety with very fruity aromatics, whose wines and sparkling wines clearly show the taste of fully ripe grapes.

Its aroma rises from the glass and delights the nose even before the first sip.

Wine + Sparkling Wine from Scheurebe

We produce our Scheurebe wines as medium-sweet to sweet wines, because sweetness allows the fruity bouquet of the grape variety to come through particularly well.

Scheurebe sparkling wine also has a small amount of subtle residual sweetness, which underlines the fruity notes of the grape variety.

In addition to Scheurebe wines and sparkling wine, we also offer a delicious grape juice made from this variety. Current vintages and prices can be found in the product overview further down the page.

Vineyard Sites of Scheurebe at Weingut Fuchs

Our Scheurebe vineyards in Rheinhessen are located at “Dalsheimer Bürgel” and “Dalsheimer Steig”. These two excellent, warm south-eastern slopes in Flörsheim-Dalsheim provide very deep soils that suit Scheurebe particularly well.

Our oldest vineyard, planted in 1969, is located in Einselthum, Palatinate, on the Kreuzberg with a gentle southern exposure. We care for this old vineyard with particular dedication, as these gnarled old vines produce especially aromatic grapes.

Interesting Facts about the White Grape Variety Scheurebe

Origin of Scheurebe

Sweet Scheurebe white wine

With his 88th seedling from a series of crosses between Silvaner and Riesling, the grape breeder Georg Scheu succeeded in developing the new white grape variety Scheurebe in 1916 at the State Institute for Grape Breeding in Alzey.

However, the breeder’s contribution was only acknowledged in the variety’s name at the end of 1945. Until then, the new variety was referred to as “Dr Wagner vine”, “S 88” or simply “seedling”.

Scheurebe is one of the most successful and widely planted new grape varieties of the 20th century.

Characteristics of the Grape Variety

The aromatic Scheurebe places similarly high demands on warmth as its “father” {link:riesling_e}Riesling{/link_e}. However, its requirements regarding soil are considerably higher: while Riesling also thrives on poor and stony soils, Scheurebe requires deep, fertile soils without rocky subsoil.

The grape variety is – again in contrast to its “daddy” Riesling – sensitive to winter frost and, due to its long ripening period of the wood, requires the very best sites. Only under such conditions does the long assimilation period of the foliage allow for high-quality grapes.

The appealing aromatics of Scheurebe depend strongly on the length of the ripening period in each vintage; in cool and wet summers, which fortunately occur only very rarely here, Scheurebe does not reach its full aromatic expression.

Scheurebe must never be harvested too early.

At our estate, it is always among the last vineyards to be picked.

Scheurebe grapes grow in compact clusters; the taste of their greenish-yellow berries is highly aromatic and clearly shows the typical bouquet with fruit notes of ripe pear, peach, cassis and other fruits.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Scheurebe

What kind of wine is Scheurebe?

Scheurebe is an aromatic white grape variety. Its wines have an intense bouquet and show a pronounced fruity, often “grape-like” aroma. They are known for a clear, very expressive character.

What does Scheurebe taste like?

Scheurebe tastes very fruity and aromatic, often with notes of ripe pear or peach, with lively acidity – in fruity styles complemented by a fine sweetness that supports the bouquet.

Is Scheurebe a sweet wine?

Scheurebe can be made sweet, but it does not have to be. We produce Scheurebe in a fruity sweet style, because a certain degree of sweetness highlights the aromatic character of the grape variety particularly well. As a sparkling wine, we also offer Scheurebe with subtle residual sweetness to emphasize the fruit.

When do you drink Scheurebe?

Scheurebe is a wine for many occasions. Fruity styles pair well with spicy dishes, Asian cuisine, cheese or fruity desserts – or can simply be enjoyed on their own. Scheurebe sparkling wine is suitable as an aperitif and pairs very well with fish and poultry dishes.
