Grape Variety Regent – Deep Colour, Velvety Fruit

Regent is a modern red grape crossing and belongs to the disease-resistant grape varieties. Approved for cultivation since the mid-1990s, it has been planted increasingly in German vineyards.

Typical Regent wines are deeply coloured, fruity reds with a soft structure, moderate acidity and fine tannins. Aromas often show notes of dark berries, sometimes accompanied by hints of cassis.

At Weingut Fuchs, Regent is produced as a single-varietal dessert red wine. In addition, Regent is also used as a blending partner in dry red wines, where its fruity character helps shape the overall flavour profile.

Dry or off-dry red wines containing Regent are versatile food companions. As a dessert wine, Regent pairs particularly well with rich desserts such as chocolate mousse or tiramisu, with walnuts, fine chocolate or strongly flavoured cheeses.

Our Regent vines grow at a sunny, warm site with deep soils at the Dalsheimer Bürgel. These conditions promote reliable ripening as well as the development of the variety’s typical colour intensity and fruit expression.

Origin of Regent

Regent was bred in 1967 at the Institute for Grapevine Breeding Geilweilerhof in the Southern Palatinate. The variety resulted from a cross between the white Diana grape (Silvaner x Mueller-Thurgau) and the red Chambourcin grape.

Regent has only been officially approved for cultivation since 1996. The name derives from the famous 140.5-carat “Regent” diamond from India, which was worn by Louis XV on his crown, later by Marie Antoinette as jewellery and by Napoleon as a pommel on his sword.

Characteristics of the Variety

Regent belongs to the disease-resistant grape varieties and shows increased tolerance to vine diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis. As a result, plant protection measures in the vineyard can be reduced.

The variety prefers mild, sheltered sites and ripens comparatively early, often reaching high must weights.

The loosely structured clusters bear small berries with intensely coloured juice, which is responsible for the naturally deep colour of the wines.
