Grape Variety Morio-Muscat – Intense Muscat Bouquet and Pronounced Aromatics

Morio-Muskat is an aromatic white grape variety that was bred in 1928 by Peter Morio. Today, it counts among the more rarely cultivated specialities in German viticulture.

Morio-Muscat is characterised by its intense, spicy Muscat bouquet, which becomes particularly pronounced at full ripeness. The aromatic profile is often complemented by citrus and floral nuances, such as elderflower.

In terms of colour, Morio-Muscat white wines show an attractive golden-yellow hue.

We deliberately vinify Morio-Muscat in a semi-sweet style. The gentle sweetness supports the pronounced bouquet and gives the wine a harmonious and well-balanced character.

Morio-Muscat is especially popular as a wine on its own, as a summer and terrace wine, or as a spritzer. With food, it pairs well with cheese and also works as an aromatic accompaniment to lighter dishes.

Morio-Muscat Sites at Weingut Fuchs

The Morio-Muscat vines at Weingut Fuchs are located in the Rheinhessen part of the estate, in warm sites around Dalsheim and Monsheim.

These sites provide the necessary warmth and ripening period, allowing the variety to fully develop its intense aromatics.

Facts About the White Grape Variety Morio-Muscat

Origin of Morio-Muscat

White grape variety Morio-Muscat with cheese

Morio-Muscat was bred in 1928 by Peter Morio at the Geilweilerhof grape breeding institute in the Palatinate.

Originally, Green Silvaner and Pinot Blanc were thought to be the parent varieties. Genetic analyses later showed that Morio-Muscat is the result of a crossing between Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and Green Silvaner.

Characteristics of the White Grape Variety Morio-Muscat

Morio-Muscat places high demands on site and vineyard management. Due to its early budburst, it is highly susceptible to late frost and therefore requires warm, well-protected sites.

Only at full ripeness does Morio-Muscat develop its distinctive, intensely spicy Muscat bouquet. On less favourable sites or when harvested too early, the variety falls well short of its potential.

The variety requires deep soils and careful cultivation. Because of its early budburst, protection against wildlife damage is also necessary. The grapes ripen early and form compact, tightly packed clusters. The thin-skinned, greenish-yellow berries show a pronounced Muscat flavour.

According to vineyard statistics published by the German Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, Morio-Muscat is becoming increasingly rare. In 2019, the total vineyard area in Rheinhessen amounted to less than 150 hectares.
