Grape Variety Moscato Giallo – Noble Muscat Aromatics

Moscato Giallo is one of the more rarely cultivated white grape varieties and is regarded as a particularly noble member of the large Muscat family. Even in its North Italian homeland the variety is grown only in small plantings. In Germany, cultivation required special experimental approval until 2017.

Moscato Giallo is closely related to Rosenmuskateller and produces highly aromatic, expressive white wines.

Typical of Moscato Giallo is its intense, palate-filling Muscat character with pronounced grape fruit and fine fruity nuances. Accompanying aromas often include peach, citrus notes and orange blossom. Combined with its fine acidity, this results in fresh, elegant and very distinctive white wines.

To highlight the aromatics in the best possible way, we vinify our Moscato Giallo with a subtle touch of residual sweetness as a {link:off-dry}semi-dry wine{/link}.

Moscato Giallo white wine is a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with aromatic, spicy or sweet-and-sour dishes as well as with flavourful cheeses.

Our Moscato Giallo vines have been growing since 2008 at the “Vogelsang” vineyard in Einselthum, an exposed south-facing slope. The highly mineral, stony soil places high demands on the vines but offers this demanding variety excellent conditions for optimal ripening.

Especially in the early years, patience was required for the young vines to establish. Some vines had to be replanted – today they reward us with highly concentrated, aromatic grapes.

Origin of Moscato Giallo

Moscato Giallo belongs to the large family of Muscat grape varieties. This old autochthonous variety originates from Northern Italy.

In Germany, cultivation was long only possible within the framework of experimental plantings. Only since 2017 has Moscato Giallo been officially classified as an approved grape variety – yet it has retained its reputation as a rare speciality for enthusiasts.

Characteristics of the White Grape Variety Moscato Giallo

The bunches are medium to large and very loosely structured. The relatively thick-skinned berries show good resistance to disease and turn an attractive golden yellow at an early stage.

Moscato Giallo is a late-ripening grape variety that requires excellent vineyard sites to reach full maturity. We usually harvest the grapes at the very end of our already late harvest period so that the complex aromatics can fully develop.

Only at full ripeness does the variety reveal its complete aromatic depth.
