Sweet Wines · Fruity + Aromatic

What Are Sweet Wines?
Sweet wines have an expressive sweet, fruity taste and are often considered wines for true enthusiasts.
The difference to off-dry wines is their more pronounced sweetness and to wines of noble sweetness is their usually lighter, more easy-going style.
If you prefer wines that are not too dry and enjoy the sweetness of fully ripe grapes, sweet white wines, smooth, sweet rosés and fruity sweet red wines are an excellent choice.
Sweet wines are ideal stand-alone drinks—for welcoming guests, at parties, as an aperitif or simply for pure enjoyment.
They are also more versatile as food companions than is often assumed.
Which Wines are Considered “Sweet”?
Wines are classified as sweet when they contain at least 45 g/l residual sugar—there is no defined upper limit.
The sweetness comes from the natural sugars of fully ripe grapes. After fermentation, sweet wines are often blended with so-called sweet reserve—unfermented grape must that was previously cooled and stored under pressure.
The higher proportion of unfermented must is the reason why sweet wines usually contain less alcohol than dry wines.

Grape Varieties for Sweet Wines
In principle, sweet wine can be produced from any grape variety. At Weingut Fuchs, we prefer varieties of intense fruitiness whose aromatics harmonise particularly well with pronounced sweetness. In turn, sweetness highlights the varietal flavours of the wines.
White Wines
- Gewuerztraminer—spicy, intense flavours
- Huxel—a very fruity grape variety
- Sauvignon Blanc—herbal and spicy notes
- Scheu’s Grape—grapey, fruity aromatics
Red Wines
- Dunkelfelder – particularly fruit-intensive
- Moscato Rosa – spicy notes with hints of rose
- Pinot Noir – fine Burgundy-style fruitiness

Sweet Wines with Food
If you enjoy sweet wines, there is no reason not to pair them with food, as they complement a wide range of dishes. They are particularly harmonious with
- spicy grilled dishes,
- savoury meat dishes such as goulash,
- sweet-and-sour dishes from Asian cuisine,
- cheese,
- desserts and sweet dishes,
- cakes and pastries.

What Matters Is What You Enjoy
Sweet wines are often dismissed by so-called connoisseurs. It is difficult to understand where this prejudice comes from, as sweet wines are in no way inferior to dry wines in terms of quality. They simply differ in sweetness.
Feel free to experiment with unusual food and wine pairings. What matters most is simply what you enjoy.
We recommend ensuring that food and wine do not overpower each other: robust wines with robust dishes, delicate wines with delicate dishes. Colour and sweetness are of secondary importance.
Serving Temperature for Sweet Wines
- White wines and rosés: well chilled, according to taste
- Red wines: approx. 16–18° C, and depending on preference (and even weather conditions), also enjoyable slightly chilled.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Sweet Wines

What are sweet wines?
Sweet wines are wines with a clearly noticeable, natural residual sweetness.
Which wines are considered sweet?
Wines are considered sweet when sweetness is clearly dominant. These can be white, rosé, or red wines – the key factor is the winemaking style, not the color.
What do sweet wines taste like?
Sweet wines taste smooth, fruity, and harmonious. Typical aromas include ripe fruits, berries, or spicy notes, depending on grape variety and style.
Are sweet wines always very sweet?
No. The range goes from moderately sweet to distinctly sweet. Acidity and fruit strongly influence how intense the sweetness is perceived on the palate.
What is the difference between sweet and semi-sweet wines?
“Semi-sweet” describes wines with noticeable but lower sweetness. “Sweet” indicates a more pronounced perception of sweetness and a higher residual sugar level.
Do sweet wines have less alcohol?
Often yes. If not all natural sugar is fermented, less alcohol is produced compared to dry wines.
How can you recognize a sweet wine when buying?
Clues include terms like “sweet” or “semi-sweet” as well as descriptions such as fruity, smooth, round, or harmonious. Recommendations for dessert or pure enjoyment also indicate a sweet style.
